With the winter showing up at our doorsteps, it is time to chop the firewood and build a nice warm, crackling fire. Over the years people have developed tricks and strategies that make it easier and more convenient to get a fire going even on the coldest of days. The trouble is, your firewood could be a major reason for pest problems in the winter. So, in order to prepare you for a cold, but pest free winter, here are some myths uncovered about firewood and how you can prevent pest infestations. Myth 1: Keep firewood stacked close to your home Sounds like a great idea, right? If you keep the firewood stacked close to your home (or in your garage) then you won’t have to go far on a cold winter night to gather it. But keeping firewood stored close to the house is going to really increase the chances of pests including the wood destroying termites and carpenter ants crawling right inside. Keep the pile of wood at least 20 to 30 feet away from the home and always up off the ground to be safe. Myth 2: Bring a lot of wood in now so you don’t have to go back outside Ok, so it may be really cold, windy and even snowing but it is never a good idea to take in more wood than for the one fire. Once firewood gets inside, pests that may be frozen or hiding could wake up and begin to wander through the home. An abundance of firewood sitting in your home could equate to an abundance of spiders and other pests  infesting your home. Myth 3: Spray pesticides on the wood to kill pests Even though the idea is to get rid of pests, by spraying pesticides onto your firewood you are going to create a lot worse problems. Store bought sprays will generally just cause the pests (especially ones who carve or chew through wood - termites and carpenter ants) to borrow deep down where they are hidden, not gone. And then once that firewood is tossed into the flames, you will be releasing those chemicals into your home. Avoid these pitfalls associated with firewood and you’ll stand a better chance of passing the winter pest free!
