Almost any pest is looking for three main things: food/water, a place to mate, and a place to raise their young. If you don’t want your home to be that place, then it's time to make a change.
A cluttered home can be frustrating enough. But as messes grow, they could become dining and harborage areas for creeping critters.
If small pests start crawling around your home, the clutter in your place may have already reached a critical level. You might not even have realized there were messes to clean up! Here are three rooms you should check up on and clear out to prevent a pest infestation.
In the attic:
Cleaning the attic might not be a part of your normal routine, but maybe it should be. In addition to rodents, the attic is a haven for many critters who remain undisturbed
. Instead of dubbing the attic your dumping place for all things seasonal or unwanted, turn it into an organized storage place. Excess, disorganized stuff up there is the perfect place for pests to hide.
While it’s tempting to toss everything but the kitchen sink into your attic, be sure the items you’re storing are properly protected from potential pests. If kept clean, your attic will be less welcoming for unwanted critters.
In the kitchen:
Leftovers are a magnet for ants in your kitchen. When you drop a few crumbs on the counter or spill a few drips of soup on your stove, nearby pests may take notice. Clutter and open containers in your pantry are also good hiding places for pests. That open bag of chips and the pieces of cereal that fell on the ground need to be taken care of.
Instead of inviting pests into your kitchen, clean up spills, take out the trash and properly seal bags and containers. Pests can also make their homes in cupboards you don’t frequently open, so be sure to wash and organize your cupboards on a regular basis. Dishes are important, too. Be sure to promptly wash dishes instead of letting them sit in your sink.
In the living room:
Brushing some dust or small food particles away doesn’t hurt, right? But, you could be starting a dangerous trend. The clutter that builds up under your couch and around the living spaces in your home could be attracting pests.
Be sure to move your furniture and vacuum underneath every so often. Besides, you might come across that lost earring or book you accidentally brushed underneath. If you’re still seeing critters crawling on your floor, they could be coming from doors and windows. Take a look and be sure to seal any openings.
