Last month, we had a chance to catch up with one of our own Plunkett’s technicians, Tina Danner.
She thoroughly enjoys her career, but she says it wouldn’t be possible without the people that shape her experiences.
From client gratitude to sharing a family-like atmosphere with coworkers, Tina looks forward to new experiences every day. Here’s what else she had to say!
Q: What’s it like working on your own? Do you have a lot of interactions with coworkers?
We have our own areas. Basically, in the winter time is when we talk a lot. You’re out on your route, on your own. You could call someone and talk to them, but they’re busy, too. There’s not a whole lot of chit-chat going on. If you have a problem, you usually call your supervisor or a coworker if you know they’ve encountered something you haven’t before.
Q: You probably have many setbacks and challenges in everyday situations. What are some of the biggest challenges you face in your career?
A: Keeping people happy. It’s the hardest thing in the world when you’re dealing with pest issues and letting them know you’re doing everything you can for them. A lot of times, you just want to show them that you care and you want to take care of the situation. If you tell someone you’re going to follow up with them, you need to make sure you’re following up with them; they remember that. That’s how you get your clients’ trust and make them say, ‘Hey, they take care of me.’ There are other pest control companies they could call at any moment.
Q: There are a lot of pest control companies out there, but what is it that sets Plunkett’s apart, or makes it different?
A: Our training — we just have top-notch training. I don’t know of any other company that puts that much time into making sure their employees are ready to come out into the field. I’ve talked to people at other companies where they get one day of training and then, poof! — they’re out there in their trucks and out on the route. I would be petrified! Plunkett’s has developed this training program for years. We’ve been in the business for over 100 years, so this training program is top notch. They’ve worked out all the kinks, and they get everybody ready for dealing with the insects and everything else we do.
Q: Do you have any funny or unique stories about pests you’ve encountered?
I have millions. I have a home client who’s had a mouse issue for the past 8 years. I just became her technician 6 months ago, and she hasn’t had a mouse since then. She’s just ecstatic! She actually called in last month and said, “I can’t believe it! I had one Plunkett’s technician that came, and I haven’t had a single mouse in my house in 6 months. Usually I have 4 or 5!’
I get a lot of gratification from people who call in and tell me that I solved their problem. Even though they won’t need you for that problem anymore, they’ll always think of you when something comes up.
Q: What’s your favorite part about the job?
I love this company, hands down. It’s been the best company I’ve ever worked for. The people here are just fantastic. We’re one huge family. If you have a concern about something and you bring it to someone’s attention, they address it right away. We’re all just so close. Once a year, everyone gets together. You can talk to people that are in Iowa or Nebraska — people you don’t see all the time — and it’s like you haven’t even missed a beat. It’s like it hasn’t even been a year. There’s a huge family-like atmosphere in our company. We all meld well together.
